How Do Bathtub Overflows Happen?

Our extensive research (we asked around at a couple of grocery stores) is other people.

No, that’s true. At least, it’s not always true.

Usually what happens is the overflow drain becomes blocked (sometimes on purpose), allowing water to spill out of the tub, onto the floor, and into the subflooring, and down into the ceiling or walls. It can happen more than once, weakening the structures so you end up with a waterfall one day that seems to have sprung out of nowhere.

It's also possible that someone – not you – fails to pay attention and doesn’t notice the tub overflowing.

One of us has a friend who says the best childrearing advice she ever heard was to never let children live in the house, and if she and her husband had paid attention to it, they would have saved lots of money over the years. Once, she realized one child had been suspiciously quiet and then she noticed water was spilling out from under the bathroom door, and when she opened the door, the tub was overflowing and there were toys floating all over the bathroom.

Nonetheless, most people do want their children to live in the house.
