Serendipity and the Department of Trivia

Serendipity is the knack of accidental discovery or learning one thing while on the way to learning something else. Here’s something we meant to keep secret, but you probably knew anyway; there is no Department of Trivia. Whoever goes looking for information on a specific topic, for example odor control, and gets lost in the inevitable labyrinth of irrelevant but interesting facts becomes the trivia department for that topic.

Therefore, because today’s video needed to focus on smoke damage and lingering odors, we decided to look up information on those topics, and got lost in a subtopic on odors.

Scents that Would Not be Odd if They Came from Someplace Else:

The binturong is small, ridiculously cute mammal from Southeast Asia that is also called the bearcat despite not being related to either bears or cats (beyond being a mammal). Its urine contains 2-AP, which gives movie popcorn the movie-popcorn aroma. Movie popcorn will never have the same appeal.

The chocolate daisy is a yellow-petaled, brownish-red-centered flower that smells like chocolate when you pluck the petals. No information on why anyone thought to do such a thing in the first place.
