Categories of Water Contamination
Finding excess water often requires specialized equipment and removing it will require advanced equipment such as pumps, heated dryers, and powerful fans. Contaminated water requires additional training and equipment, both of which we have.
Our SERVPRO of Murrieta technicians has IICRC-certified training in restoration from water damage and in cleaning and decontamination of hazardous waste, including:
- Mold, mildew, other microbial growth
- Other biohazards, such as sewage, animal products, medical waste, etc.
- Chemical waste
Contaminants can become airborne, which is why you need professional remediation.
The colors associated with the category names do not correlate with what you would see; any category of water can be any color.
Water from mains that feed into your workplace produces Category 1 (“clean” or “white”) water. It is safe for contact or drinking. Category 1 water does pick up contaminants from the environment. All categories of water become more contaminated over time. After 24 to 48 hours, mold spores open; mold thrives in any moisture.
Category 2 (“gray”) water comes from appliances such as washing machines or other equipment. It may include detergents, soil, or other non-toxic contaminants. It is not safe for contact or ingestion.
The most contaminated is Category 3 (“black”) water which comes from sewage main, lakes, industrial waste, or unknown sources. Contaminants may be toxic. SERVPRO of Murrieta is qualified to restore businesses from black water.
For any type of water damage, we’re here to make it “Like it never even happened.”
