Common Causes of Broken Pipes and How to Prevent Water Damage in Murrieta Hot Springs?

11/5/2024 (Permalink)

A broken copper pipe is causing water damage. We are water damage restoration leaders in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team restores water damage in Murrieta Hot Springs often. Broken pipes are a leading cause of residential water damage, and understanding the common causes can help homeowners prevent costly repairs.

One of the main culprits is extreme temperature changes, especially during winter. In Southern California, pipes can freeze and then burst as the water inside expands, although this happens less frequently than in colder climates. Ensuring proper insulation of pipes in unheated areas, such as attics can prevent this issue.

Another common cause is age. Over time, pipes wear down and become more susceptible to cracks, leaks, or breaks. Regular plumbing system inspections can help identify aging pipes before they become a problem.

High water pressure is another factor that can weaken pipes, leading to bursts. Installing a pressure regulator can help maintain safe water pressure levels and protect your plumbing.  Tree roots can also damage underground pipes by infiltrating and clogging them. If you suspect root intrusion, be mindful of tree placement and consider professional solutions.

By addressing these common causes of broken pipes, homeowners can prevent water damage and protect their property from significant harm.

The Importance of Unclogged Storm Drains for Preventing Water Damage in Murrieta?

10/15/2024 (Permalink)

Water flows to a clean storm drain. We are storm damage restoration leaders in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team wants everyone to be prepared for the next heavy rain event. Intense rainfall can lead to severe water damage in homes, particularly when storm drains are obstructed. These drains are essential for channeling rainwater away from your property, keeping it from accumulating near the foundation. However, when leaves, debris, or dirt clog the storm drains, they lose their efficiency, which can result in flooding and water seeping into your home.

When storm drains are clogged, water can backup and overflow onto street and into low-lying areas, and eventually reaching basements or lower levels of homes. This can lead to structural damage, mold growth, and costly repairs. To avoid these issues, it is essential to keep your storm drains clean and clear, especially before heavy rain is expected.

Regularly inspect the storm drains near your home and remove any visible debris. Consider scheduling periodic professional cleanings to ensure the entire system remains free of blockages. Maintaining unclogged storm drains can significantly reduce the risk of residential water damage and keep your home safe during even the heaviest downpours.

Murrieta Homeowner Avoids Water Heater Damage by Replacing Anode Rods Annually?

7/16/2024 (Permalink)

A water heater with a leak is shown. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team witnesses firsthand the damage a leaking water heater can cause to a home or business. Water heaters are an essential appliance in any home, providing the comfort of hot water for bathing, cleaning, and cooking. However, many homeowners overlook a critical component that can significantly extend the life of their water heater: the anode rod.

An anode rod is a sacrificial metal rod inserted into the water heater tank. It works by attracting corrosive elements in the water and must be replaced routinely to protect the tank. Regularly replacing this rod, ideally, once a year, can add years to the life of your water heater.

Annual anode rod replacement is a simple yet highly effective maintenance task. This practice helps prevent leaks, reduces the risk of tank failure, and ensures the water heater operates efficiently. Not only does this save on potential repair or replacement costs, but it also provides a consistent hot water supply.

By scheduling an annual check and replacing the anode rod, homeowners can protect their investment and extend the life of their water heater.

Tell-Tale Signs of Water Damage in Bathroom’s Subfloor in Murrieta Hot Springs?

5/7/2024 (Permalink)

A water-damaged floor caused by a rusted and broken toilet flange. Riverside County relies on us to restore water damage “Like it never even happened.”

Our local Murrieta team is a trusted leader in water damage restoration services serving the Murrieta Hot Springs community. Sometimes hidden broken or leaking pipes go undetected until the damage is serious.

Detecting water damage in a bathroom subfloor is critical to prevent structural issues and mold growth. Signs indicating water damage include soft or spongy flooring, indicating that the wood fibers have absorbed moisture and become weakened. When applying pressure, look for areas where the floor feels uneven or sinks slightly.

Warped or buckling flooring is another indicator of water damage, showing visible deformities or irregularities on the surface. Discoloration or staining on the floor, particularly near fixtures like toilets and sinks, may signify leaks or seepage from plumbing. Persistent musty odors in the bathroom can suggest mold or mildew growth, often thriving in damp environments caused by water damage.

Additionally, visible mold or mildew growth on the floor or along walls clearly indicates water damage. Peeling or bubbling floor coverings, such as tiles or linoleum, may also occur due to moisture weakening the adhesive bond between the covering and the subfloor. Addressing these signs promptly is essential to prevent further damage and ensure a safe and healthy bathroom environment.

What Conditions Lead to Flash Flooding Events in Murrieta?

4/23/2024 (Permalink)

A creek overflowed its banks during a flash flood. We restore flooding damage 24 hours a day in Riverside County.

SERVPRO of Murrieta responds to storm damage emergencies every year. Like many other areas, Murrieta can experience flash flooding under certain conditions. While not as common as in some other regions, flash floods can still occur due to several factors:

Intense Rainfall: Heavy or prolonged rainfall, particularly during thunderstorms can overwhelm drainage systems and cause flash flooding. Murrieta experiences its rainy season primarily in the winter months, and intense rainfall events can lead to rapid runoff and flooding, especially in urban areas with limited natural drainage.

Topography: The terrain is characterized by hills and canyons, and can contribute to flash flooding by accelerating runoff during heavy rain events. Water can quickly flow downhill, leading to localized flooding in low-lying areas, particularly near creeks, washes, and drainage channels.

Burn Scars: In areas where wildfires have occurred, such as the nearby Santa Ana Mountains, the loss of vegetation can leave the soil more susceptible to erosion and runoff during rainstorms. Burn scars can increase the risk of flash flooding and mudflows, particularly in downstream communities.

Storm Drains and Infrastructure: Inadequate or poorly maintained stormwater infrastructure, such as storm drains, culverts, and retention basins, can contribute to flash flooding by impeding the flow of water and causing backups. Clogged or blocked drainage systems can exacerbate flooding during heavy rain events.

Damaged Rain Gutter Causes Water Intrusion Issues During Major Storm in Murrieta Hot Springs?

4/16/2024 (Permalink)

A rain gutter system is being inspected and repaired. We restore water intrusion damage 24 hours a day in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team has been restoring storm damage caused by heavy rain for many years in Murrieta Hot Springs. One common, preventable cause of water intrusion results from clogged rain gutter systems.

During heavy rain events, a clogged rain gutter system can lead to severe water intrusion problems in a home. As rainwater flows off the roof, it's intended to be efficiently channeled away from the house by the gutters and downspouts.

However, when debris like leaves, twigs, and dirt accumulate in the gutters, they become blocked, preventing proper drainage. As a result, water begins to overflow from the gutters, cascading down the exterior walls of the house instead of being directed away.

This excess water can seep into the foundation, causing cracks and weakening its structural integrity over time. Additionally, water may infiltrate through windows, doors, and any gaps in the siding, leading to interior water damage, such as dampness, mold growth, and even rotting of wooden structures.

Ultimately, a clogged rain gutter system can exacerbate water intrusion issues, posing significant risks to the home's foundation, structure, and overall habitability. Regular gutter maintenance and cleaning are crucial to prevent such problems and maintain the integrity of the home.

Broken Pipe in Ceiling Causes Water Damage in Murrieta Hot Springs Home?

4/2/2024 (Permalink)

A water-damaged ceiling is shown. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team restores water damage from broken pipes in Murrieta Hot Springs every year. Here are some common causes of broken pipes in homes:

Corrosion: Over time, pipes made of metal materials like galvanized steel or copper can corrode, leading to weakened areas or pinhole leaks. Corrosion may be exacerbated by factors such as water acidity, mineral content, and the presence of oxygen.

Age: Older plumbing systems are more prone to deterioration and failure. Pipes made of materials like galvanized steel or cast iron may degrade over time, leading to leaks or ruptures.

High Water Pressure: Excessive water pressure can put stress on pipes, causing them to weaken or develop cracks over time. This is particularly common in homes with faulty pressure regulators or where water pressure is not properly controlled.

Physical Damage: Pipes can be damaged by external factors such as accidental impact, shifting soil, or construction work. Damage to pipes may result in cracks, fractures, or complete breaks, leading to leaks or flooding.

Regular inspection, maintenance, and prompt repair of plumbing systems can help prevent broken pipes and mitigate the potential for water damage in homes.

Advanced Technology Used to Detect Hidden Pipe Break in Murrieta Home?

3/5/2024 (Permalink)

A technician uses a hygrometer to measure moisture levels. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team is a trusted leader in water damage restoration services. We use hygrometers to measure the relative humidity or moisture content in the air as follows:

Humidity Measurement: A hygrometer typically contains a sensor, often made of materials like hair, synthetic polymers, or electronic components, that has the property of absorbing or releasing moisture depending on the surrounding humidity levels.

Sensor Response: As the humidity in the air changes, the sensor expands, or contracts or its electrical properties change. This response is then converted into a humidity reading.

Display: The hygrometer displays the relative humidity as a percentage on its screen or dial, indicating how much moisture is present in the air compared to the maximum amount the air could hold at that temperature.

To detect a hidden pipe leak using a hygrometer, we:

Baseline Measurement: First, establish a baseline relative humidity reading where you suspect a hidden pipe leak. Ensure the area is well-ventilated and not exposed to excessive moisture from other sources.

Monitor Changes: Regularly monitor the hygrometer's reading over time. If there is a hidden pipe leak, the affected area may experience a rise in humidity levels due to water seeping into walls, ceilings, or floors.

Sudden Spikes: We look for sudden or unexplained spikes in humidity readings. A significant and persistent increase in relative humidity could indicate a hidden pipe leak and the presence of water where it shouldn't be.

Garden Swales Prevent Flooding from Runoff in Murrieta Hot Springs Neighborhood?

2/27/2024 (Permalink)

Runoff from heavy rain runs through a neighborhood. We restore storm damage 24 hours a day in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team is a trusted leader in storm damage restoration services in Murrieta Hot Springs. The strategic placement of swales can significantly reduce runoff in neighborhoods. Swales are shallow, vegetated channels or depressions designed to manage and control water flow. Here's how they contribute to runoff reduction:

Water Capture: Swales capture rainwater and stormwater runoff from higher elevations, such as roofs, driveways, and sidewalks. Instead of allowing water to flow unchecked, swales channel it into designated areas within the garden.

Infiltration: Swales are typically designed with permeable soils and vegetation that promote water infiltration. As water collects in the swale, it gradually seeps into the ground, replenishing the local aquifer and reducing runoff volume entering storm drains.

Filtration: The plants and soil in swales act as natural filters, removing pollutants and impurities from the runoff before it enters water bodies or stormwater systems, improving water quality.

Retention: Swales can temporarily retain water during heavy rainfall, helping to prevent flash flooding and downstream inundation by gradually releasing the stored water into the surrounding soil over time.

Aesthetic and Functional Landscaping: Swales can be integrated into the garden design, enhancing the landscape's visual appeal while also serving a functional purpose.

Broken Pipe Causes Extensive Damage in Murrieta Home?

2/20/2024 (Permalink)

A person catches water in a bucket while calling for help for a water damage emergency. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team is a trusted leader in water damage restoration services. Broken pipes in a home can wreak havoc, causing extensive damage and expensive repairs. Water damage is the most immediate concern, as leaking or burst pipes can release substantial water into the property. This can result in structural damage, compromising the integrity of walls, ceilings, and floors. How Can I Prevent Water Intrusion into My Home During a Heavy Rainstorm in Murrieta?

1/9/2024 (Permalink)

Water from heavy rain pools around the foundation of a home. We restore storm damage 24 hours daily in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team is on call and ready to respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. When storms blow in and bring heavy rainfall, often the storm drains are overwhelmed and water can back up and cause water intrusion into homes in low-lying areas.

Preventing stormwater intrusion into your home during heavy rainfall is crucial for safeguarding your property and maintaining a dry living environment. Here are essential steps to minimize the risk of stormwater intrusion:

  • Begin with regular gutter and downspout maintenance, ensuring they remain free of debris and installing gutter guards to facilitate proper water flow. Extend downspouts at least 5-10 feet away from your foundation to prevent water pooling near your home's walls.
  • Properly grading your yard away from the house encourages water to flow away from the foundation. Additionally, consider installing a French drain or swale in your yard to redirect surface water away from your home.
  • Seal any foundation cracks or gaps to prevent water seepage, and install window well covers to block rainwater from entering through basement openings.
  • Incorporate water-absorbing native plants into your landscape to mitigate runoff. Regularly maintain your stormwater management system if you have one.

How Can I Prevent Heavy Rain Runoff From Flooding My Murrieta Home?

12/27/2023 (Permalink)

A swale filled with mulch and vegetation catches rain and filters rainwater runoff. We restore storm damage in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team responds to storm damage emergencies every year. If you notice rainwater pooling around your home, consider building a swale to catch the stormwater runoff. To build a swale, follow these steps:

  1. Identify the area where runoff tends to accumulate or flow toward your home. Ensure the swale's path is away from your home's foundation.
  1. Determine the swale's length, width, and depth based on the volume of runoff and your property's slope. A typical swale has a depth of 6-12 inches and a width of 2-3 feet.
  1. Use stakes and string to mark the desired path of the swale. Ensure it has a gentle, even slope away from your home.
  1. Dig a trench along the marked path, maintaining a consistent slope. The depth and width should match your plan.
  1. Shape the Swale: Create a slight "V" shape with a flat bottom in the trench.
  1. Check the Slope: Ensure the swale has a consistent slope, usually between 2% and 5%, so water can flow freely.
  1. Add Gravel: Optionally, line the bottom of the swale with gravel to enhance drainage and reduce erosion.
  1. Plant Grass or Vegetation: To stabilize the swale and prevent erosion, plant grass or other native vegetation along its banks. The roots will help absorb and filter the runoff.
  1. Mulch: Apply mulch to the swale's surface, which can further reduce erosion and improve water absorption.

Pipe Break Causes Flooding in Murrieta Hot Springs Neighborhood?

12/19/2023 (Permalink)

A burst pipe floods the ground. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team is a trusted leader in water damage restoration services. Murrieta Hot Springs residents trust us to respond quickly and mitigate and restore water damage “Like it never even happened.” A broken pipe can flood a neighborhood when it disrupts the controlled flow of water within a municipal water supply or sewage system. This can happen for several reasons:

Increased Water Flow: A ruptured pipe can release water at a much higher rate than the system can handle, overwhelming drainage systems and causing flooding.

Water Pressure: Municipal water supply systems are pressurized to deliver water efficiently. A broken pipe can release water under high pressure, exacerbating the flooding as it forcefully escapes the damaged section.

Underground Networks: Many pipes are located underground, making it challenging to detect and respond to leaks promptly. Water can spread throughout the neighborhood before authorities are aware of the issue.

Soil Saturation: The escaping water can saturate the soil, reducing its ability to absorb additional moisture. This can lead to surface flooding as water pools in low-lying areas.

Property Damage: As the water spreads, it can infiltrate homes, businesses, and infrastructure. This can result in structural damage, ruined possessions, and costly repairs for affected residents.

Clogged Rain Gutters Cause Water Intrusion Issues in Murrieta Home?

11/27/2023 (Permalink)

Water is streaming over the top of a clogged rain gutter. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team has been restoring storm damage for Murrieta residents for many years. A clogged rain gutter can cause water intrusion issues in your home due to its impact on the drainage system and the way it manages rainwater. Here's how a clogged rain gutter can lead to water intrusion problems:

Water Overflow: When your rain gutters are clogged with leaves, debris, or other materials, they cannot efficiently channel rainwater away from your roof and foundation. Instead, the water can overflow the sides of the gutter.

Roof Damage: Excessive water overflow from clogged gutters can spill onto your roof, potentially causing damage. This can lead to rotting of roof materials, degradation of shingles, and even leaks into your attic or ceiling.

Fascia and Soffit Damage: The fascia (the board that runs horizontally behind the gutter) and soffit (the underside of the eaves) can also be damaged by overflowing water. This damage can lead to wood rot, weakening of the structural components, and expensive repairs.

Foundation Problems: The primary function of gutters is to direct rainwater away from your home's foundation. If gutters are clogged and water is overflowing, it can saturate the soil around your foundation. Over time, this can lead to foundation damage, including cracks, settling, and basement or crawl space water intrusion.

Crawlspace Flooding: As water seeps into the soil around your foundation due to gutter overflow, it can find its way into your crawl space. This can result in water intrusion issues, mold growth, and damage to your belongings.

Landscape Erosion: Clogged gutters can also affect your landscaping. Overflowing water can erode soil, damage plants, and create unsightly pools of standing water in your yard.

Tree Roots Cause Broken Pipes and Water Damage in Buena Park Home?

11/27/2023 (Permalink)

Tree roots grow around a pipe. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Orange County.

Our local Buena Park team responds to water damage emergencies throughout the year. Tree roots can compromise plumbing pipes and underground sewer and water lines. Here are some of the ways tree roots can cause damage to plumbing pipes:

Infiltration: Tree roots seek out sources of water and nutrients, and they are naturally drawn to the moisture inside sewer and water pipes. Even small cracks or joints in pipes can release tiny amounts of moisture, attracting roots. Over time, the roots can infiltrate these openings and grow into the interior of the pipe.

Blockages: As tree roots grow inside pipes, they can expand and multiply, gradually filling the pipe's interior. This intrusion can obstruct the flow of water and waste, leading to partial or complete blockages. This can result in slow drainage, backups, and sewage spills in extreme cases.

Pipe Damage: Tree roots can exert substantial pressure on the walls of pipes as they grow, causing the pipes to crack, break, or collapse. This damage can occur in various ways, including root penetration through existing cracks, the expansion of roots in joints, or the sheer force exerted by growing roots against the pipe walls.

Leakage: Roots can cause leaks by damaging the pipe itself or by forcing their way through joints and connections, creating openings for water and sewage to escape into the surrounding soil. This not only leads to water loss but also can attract more roots as they sense the moisture.

Chemical Changes: Tree roots can release chemicals that accelerate the deterioration of pipe materials. For instance, the roots' presence can cause the pipe's interior to corrode more quickly, weakening the structure and making it more susceptible to damage.

Corroded Pipes Cause Water Damage in Murrieta Hot Springs Home?

11/20/2023 (Permalink)

A corroded pipe is visible on the exterior of a home. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Riverside County.

When you have water damage from a failed pipe, fast action is necessary to avoid more costly and time-consuming repairs. Our local Murrieta team has been restoring water damage in the Murrieta Hot Springs area for many years. One of the more common forms of pipe failure is corrosion.

What Causes Pipe Corrosion?

Corrosion is a chemical process where the metal of the pipes gradually deteriorates over time due to exposure to water and other elements. Different types of pipes (e.g., copper, galvanized steel, or iron) are susceptible to corrosion to varying degrees. Corrosion can weaken the pipe walls, leading to leaks or even complete pipe failure. Factors like the pH of the water, water temperature, and the presence of contaminants can influence the rate of corrosion.

By conducting regular inspections, performing routine maintenance, and addressing plumbing issues promptly, you can help prevent pipe failures and extend the lifespan of your home's plumbing system.

Clogged Roof Drains Cause Commercial Water Damage in Murrieta?

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

Water pools on top of commercial building’s flat top roof. We respond to commercial water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Riverside County.

Our local Murrieta team is a trusted leader in commercial water damage restoration services. Our highly trained team uses advanced technology and powerful, industrial-grade water extraction and drying equipment to remove water and dry damaged areas quickly, saving our customers time and money in many cases.

Here are some steps you can take to reduce water damage on commercial roofing systems from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety:

Inspect and clean the roof drainage system

Remove debris, inspect the roof drains and repair cracks, and re-check the drainage systems.

Re-check drainage systems

Do this at least twice a year, ideally during spring and fall. This includes all gutters, interior drains, and scuppers.

Check for water

Check for long-term standing water in gutters and correct any blockages. If there are no blockages, but standing water still occurs, ensure the gutter is properly sloped to the downspout.

Check the slope of the roof cover system

For low-sloped roofs, ensure the slope of the roof cover system and the insulation boards divert water to internal drains when present or to the edge of the roof. Long-term standing water is an indication of an improper slope.

Check air conditioner drains

Check downspouts

Ensure downspouts funnel water away from the building and do not allow water to accumulate near the building’s perimeter.

Up-size gutters

When replacing gutters, consider larger-sized gutters which allow for greater flow.

Broken Washing Machine Water Seal Floods Laundry Room in Murrieta Hot Springs?

8/29/2023 (Permalink)

Water covers a laundry room floor. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in Murrieta.

Every day in the United States, over 14,000 water damage insurance claims are made, and our local team in Murrieta responds to more water damage emergencies than any other form of property damage emergency each year.

Murrieta Hot Springs residents and businesses have come to rely on us for water damage restoration services. Our technicians are highly trained and certified, and we use powerful, industrial-grade water extraction and drying equipment to ensure the area is thoroughly dried.

One common form of water damage is a failed seal. The seal is designed to prevent water from escaping at the connection between the supply line and the washing machine. Even a small crack in this seal can allow water to escape. Over time, the leak will worsen and can cause water damage over time. For this reason, it is a good idea to check the seals for cracks or brittleness, which can lead to water damage if they are not replaced in time. These seals are inexpensive and may help you avoid a bigger problem and expensive repair.

The United States Geological Survey warns that the series of rainstorms caused by atmospheric rivers, coupled with the heavy snowfall in the mountains across California, may contribute to the development of an ARkstorm this year.

What is an ARkstorm?

The term “ARkstorm,” originates from “atmospheric river.” It is a hypothetical name describing a storm that can happen every 500 to 1000 years. The mega-storm develops when atmospheric rivers fall back-to-back in continuous week-long patterns where the rain rarely lets up, causing significant damage from flooding and water intrusion.

What Can I Do to Avoid Water Damage in Murrieta?

11/8/2022 (Permalink)

Water is leaking out of a pie. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration services in Riverside County.

Our team in Murrieta responds to water damage emergencies every year in Murrieta. Although water damage can strike at any time, some things can be done to minimize the chances of it happening by doing a routine inspection of your home’s plumbing system. Here are some helpful tips from the Insurance Information Institute to keep your home protected from unwanted water:

Maintain Your Indoor Plumbing Systems

Take the time to learn and understand your indoor plumbing systems. For instance, knowing the main water shut-off valve in your home and how to shut the water supply off can eliminate stress and save money on costly repairs and time.

  • Inspect appliance hoses and faucets. Make it a practice every year to check hoses leading to water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerator ice makers.
  • You may also want to invest in a water leak monitoring and shut-off system that can alert you to any leakage issues. Immediately replace any hoses that have cracks or leaks, and replace them every five to seven years.
  • Inspect the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight. Reseal them if necessary.
  • Shut off the washing machine while away on vacation
  • Check plumbing and heating pipes for cracks and leaks. If you see visible signs of wear, have these repairs made immediately.

Swimming Pool Leaking and Causing Water Damage to Murrieta Hot Springs Home?

6/7/2022 (Permalink)

A child is floating in a swimming pool in a colorful inflatable ring. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Riverside County.

Murrieta Hot Springs residents love their pools! Our Murrieta team responds to water damage emergencies every year caused by hidden water leaks. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a pool leak can weaken your home and pool's foundation and waste hundreds of thousands of gallons of water in one year. Here are some steps from the EPA to tell if your pool is leaking:

  • Grab a clear container and a marker
  • During the test period, turn off the pool auto-fill, do not manually add water to the pool, and avoid splashing water out of the pool
  • Put the container on the pool steps and mark the water level on the outside of the container
  • Now, fill the container with pool water up to the mark you just made so the levels match
  • Mark the water level inside the container
  • Now, wait and give evaporation time to work, usually two to three days. If it rains or is windy, you'll have to perform the test again.
  • Place the container on the pool steps. If the water in the pool is lower than the water in the container, you have a leak
  • If both the pool level and the container water levels are the same, you do not have a leak

Outdoor Water Leaks in Murrieta Hot Springs?

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

A sprinkler system is watering a lawn. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Riverside County.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), outdoor irrigation system leaks can waste about 6300 gallons of water a month. Our local team in Murrieta restores water damage in Murrieta Hot Springs 24-hours a day, every day of the year. Here is some information about outdoor leaks from the EPA:

Outdoor Leaks

If you have an in-ground irrigation system, check it each spring before use to make sure it wasn't damaged by frost or freezing. An irrigation system that has a leak 1/32nd of an inch in diameter (about the thickness of a dime) can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month. If you need help, hire an irrigation professional certified by a WaterSense labeled program to inspect it for you. These professionals have passed a certification program focused on water efficiency. They will not only help you detect and correct leaks in the system but also maximize its efficiency.

Tip:  Don't forget garden hoses!  Check your garden hose for leaks at its connection to the spigot. If it leaks while you run your hose, replace the nylon or rubber hose washer and ensure a tight connection to the spigot using pipe tape and a wrench.

SERVPRO® of Murrieta responds to water damage emergencies often in Murrieta. Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute for protecting your home from water intrusion:

Exterior Inspection and Repair

  • Water can be prevented from entering a structure’s exterior through routine inspection and maintenance and making repairs as needed.
  • Caulk and seal windows
  • Inspect the roof for missing and aging shingles
  • Check rain gutters and drainage systems and remove any debris
  • Check downspouts and clear any clogs and make sure they are draining away from the structure

  • Make sure water drains away from the building as water is invasive and will find its way into a structure easily when water is allowed to pool around the foundation. After a storm, or when the ground is already saturated by rainwater, the water may enter into the foundation wall through any cracks.

Toilet troubleshooting in Murrieta Hot Springs.

Water damage emergencies happen to the best of us. If you have indoor plumbing, you are likely to have a water damage emergency at some time in your life. At SERVPRO® of Murrieta, we respond to water damage emergencies throughout the year and know that some water damage and plumbing emergencies can be prevented. The Institute for Business and Home Safety lists these prevention and maintenance tips for keeping toilets in good working order:

  • Be patient after you flush and wait for the valve to finish refilling the tank and bowl completely. If an overflow looks imminent, lift off the tank cover, lift the float to shut off the water flow to the tank, and then turn off the supply valve.
  • Twice a year, inspect a toilet’s components, such as the fill, supply, flush valves, and the supply line. Make sure you can turn off the water supply. If you have older screw-type valves that are hard to turn or start leaking, consider replacing them with simpler ball valves that are easy to shut off quickly.

Damaged Rain Gutters in Murrieta Hot Springs?

9/14/2021 (Permalink)

A home is shown with a rain gutter system. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in Riverside County.

When working correctly, rain gutters can help prevent water intrusion and water damage to your home. SERVPRO® of Murrieta offers these tips from expert Bob Villa for determining if your rain gutters are damaged:

Inspect your rain gutters for visible signs of cracking. Use binoculars to inspect for smaller cracks. If you see extensive cracking, replacement is required.

Inspect gutter seams for damage where two horizontal sections meet.

Inspect your home’s paint job. If there is evidence of paint peeling, it may point to rain gutter failure. Check the section of the rain gutter closest to the paint damage for leaks. If there are more than a couple of leaks, you may want to replace the rain gutters.

Inspect your home’s exterior wood elements for rotting windowsills or door jambs. You may have clogged rain gutters or inadequate storm drainage.

Inspect the exterior of the home for mildew damage. If there is moisture accumulating around or near the foundation, mildew can grow. This is a sign your rain gutters are not working properly.

A shower head is shown with running water. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Riverside County.

Damaged Shower Situation in Murrieta Home?

In a study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), more than half of the shower stall water damage incidents involved a faulty shower pan. Routine inspection of your home’s plumbing systems can often identify plumbing problems before they become a bigger and more costly issue. SERVPRO® of Murrieta has been restoring water damage in Murrieta homes for years. According to this study, homes that were more than twenty years old were thirty-seven percent more likely to have water damage involving a shower. Here are some shower loss prevention and maintenance tips from the IBHS:

Inspect tile and grout every six months, paying attention to loose or cracked tiles or cracked and crumbling grout lines. Repair as needed.

Test the shower pan annually by:

  1. Blocking the drain
  2. Fill the shower stall with about one inch of water
  3. Use a pencil to mark the waterline
  4. Leave the water standing in the shower pan for 8 hours
  5. If the water level decreases, contact a plumbing professional

Indoor Plumbing Systems Maintenance Tips for Murrieta?

8/3/2021 (Permalink)

Plumbing pipes underneath a sink are shown. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Riverside County.

Water damage can become a costly repair if the damage is allowed to remain unmitigated for too long. Routine inspection and maintenance of your indoor plumbing systems may help to avoid costly repairs. SERVPRO® of Murrieta offers these tips from the Insurance Information Institute for inspecting indoor plumbing systems

  • Inspect appliance hoses and faucets. Make it a practice every year to check hoses leading to water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerator ice makers. Immediately replace any hoses that have cracks or leaks and replace them all every five to seven years.
  • Inspect showers and tubs. Check the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight and reseal if necessary.
  • When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine and never leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running.
  • Know the location of the main water shut-off valve in your home
  • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system. This will protect against the increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and can help prevent your pipes from bursting.
  • Check plumbing and heating pipes. Look closely for cracks and leaks and have any necessary repairs made immediately.

Flooding in Murrieta Hot Springs?

A flooded street is shown. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration services in Riverside County.

Does My Insurance Policy Cover this?

SERVPRO® of Murrieta responds to more water damage emergencies in Murrieta Hot Springs than any other form of property damage each year. It is important to review your homeowner's or renters' insurance policy and see what kinds of water damage the policy covers.

Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute to help you understand the different types of water policies:

Homeowners and Renters Insurance Policies

Homeowners' and renters' insurance provides coverage for burst pipes, wind-driven rain, and damage resulting from ice dams on your roof. Generally speaking, water that comes from the top down—such as rainfall and burst sprinklers—is covered by a standard homeowners policy.

Sewer and Drain Policies

Some policies cover sewer and drain backups, but many do not; however, you can purchase a sewer backup rider to your homeowner's or renters' coverage.

Flooding from Rivers

Typically, water that comes from the bottom up—such as an overflowing river—is covered by a separate flood insurance policy, which can be purchased from the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and from some private insurers. If you live in a flood-prone area, learn more about appropriate coverage.

Water Bill Too High in Murrieta Hot Springs?

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

A water meter is shown. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in Riverside County.

It’s always a good idea to periodically inspect your home for water leaks. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) water leaks from over eleven million homes amount to one trillion gallons of water waste each year in the United States. SERVPRO® of Murrieta mitigates water damage in Murrieta Hot Springs homes throughout the year, and many of these restorations could have been minimized if the water damage had been discovered sooner.

Here are some tips from the EPA for checking and determining if you are wasting water, and if so, how to check for leaks:

Take a look at your water usage during a colder month, such as January or February. If a family of four exceeds 12,000 gallons per month, there are serious leaks.

Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.

Identify toilet leaks by placing a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If any color shows up in the bowl after ten minutes, you have a leak.

Examine faucet gaskets and pipe fittings for any water on the outside of the pipe to check for surface leaks.

Washing Machine Disaster in Murrieta

You should have seen my laundry room after it flooded. It sure didn’t look like this picture! Water covered the entire floor and spilled out into the carpeted hallway. Evidently, the water supply line attached to the back of the washing machine came apart and caused the water damage. I called SERVPRO® of Murrieta and they arrived on site quickly and immediately began the cleanup and restoration process. They moved the washer and dryer and extracted all of the water from the laundry room floor and hallway. After that, they set up air mover and blowers to completely dry the room to make sure nothing warped in the drying process. They documented the entire drying process and helped me with the insurance paperwork and process.

After the room was completely dry, they cleaned and sanitized the area and cleaned the hall carpets. They also supervised the repair of the washing machine water supply line. By the time they were through you would never know that my laundry room was flooded!

Murrieta is “the gem of the valley,” which is why there’s a diamond featured on the seal and street signs.

Tidbits about diamonds

·       The largest rough diamond ever found weighed 3,106 carats, which is edging up to 22 ounces, which is around 1.36 pounds.

·       That rough diamond became 105 cut and polished diamonds.

·       There is a star that astronomers believe is made of carbon under pressure, which means it is a diamond. The discoverers named the star “Lucy” after “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”

·       Hardly anyone wanted to buy brown-colored diamonds until someone came up with the idea to call them “chocolate diamonds.”

·       Diamonds stick to grease (or grease sticks to diamonds), so it’s a good idea to remove diamond rings when taking care of the car or doing the dishes.

We want Murrieta to sparkle.

The profile of a toilet is shown in a house with the lid up. Checking for hidden water damage can prevent costly repairs later in Murrieta Hot Springs.

Are You Flushing Money Down the Toilet?

Water leaks are a common problem for households and can become costly repairs if they are not remedied quickly. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, (EPS), the average household's leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year, or the amount of water needed to wash 270 loads of laundry. Sometimes what appears on the surface to be a minor issue becomes a major repair because hidden water leaks have been allowed to seep into your home’s structure and cause damage to the subfloors, and foundation joists. SERVPRO® of Murrieta has been responding to water damage emergencies in the Murrieta area for years and has the advanced technology and a team of water restoration specialists ready to respond to your call 24 hours a day seven days a week. Here is a tip from the EPA on how to detect a leak in your toilet:

Hidden water Damage in Murrieta?

7/16/2020 (Permalink)

Waterlines are seen exposed through a water-damaged wall. No water restoration job is too big in Murrieta Hot Springs!

Water Leaks Happen

The damage was not immediately apparent. There was a slight musty smell, but it wasn’t until I returned home from vacation and saw the water bill that I knew there had to be a water leak somewhere in my house. On closer inspection of my home, I noticed a wall that was stained and blistering from the water damage inside the wall. Sure enough, water had been leaking inside my walls for at least a month before I caught it. The plumber came out and replaced the damaged pipes, and I was left with water-logged walls and soggy floors, subfloors, and baseboards, to repair. Thankfully I called SERVPRO® of Murrieta who sent their team of highly trained water restoration technicians out to inspect the damage.

They used state-of-the-art moisture detection equipment to detect, measure and monitor the moisture levels in the room and installed high-speed air movers to make the area dry faster. Once the area was completely dried out, they repaired the walls and floors, and cleaned and deodorized the space so you would never know that there had been a bad odor or a torn-up wall in my house!

wet paper and pen in the rain soaked documents do not have to be a loss thanks to SERVPRO of Murrieta

Almost no one realizes just how much water there is in dishwashers or other appliances until they break and start waterfalls that soak into kitchen floors or office equipment. Water can do huge amounts of damage even when it doesn’t arrive in torrents. Small leaks can cause enormous amounts of water damage, even in short amounts of time.

When water damage soaks Los Angeles or San Diego residents, call SERVPRO® of Murrieta at  (951) 894-4392 no matter the time or day.

Water seeps into floors, walls, and furniture very quickly. The longer water has to do its damage, the more extensive, and varied, the damage will be. That’s why SERVPRO of Murrieta is always available, and why the technicians arrive on-site regardless of the day or time. Removing the water and drying structures and contents are the priorities. Once the technicians stop the damage, they can clean, disinfect, and restore (so you don’t have to replace) all the contents.

Documents and photographs are especially vulnerable to water damage. Water starts to warp paper within minutes. Technicians at SERVPRO of Murrieta have expertise in a variety of drying techniques to prevent the water from doing additional damage, and they have additional training in document and photograph restoration techniques.

Water damage tips to reduce damage to your home

3/2/2016 (Permalink)

Kitchen ceiling with sagging from water damage

A water damage can be devastatingly stressful to a homeowner. You can feel helpless and overwhelmed. Although calling a professional is the first step we always recommend, there are some things you can do to help reduce the damage while you wait for professionals to arrive.

DO:

  • Shut off the water source if possible
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the home or building
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping or blotting with towels
  • Remove lamps and other tabletop items and wipe wood furniture with a towel
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying
  • Place foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet flooring
  • Remove any paintings, electronics or anything else that is sensitive to moisture and put in a dry area of the house

Taking the above steps can really help decrease the amount of damage to your home after a water leak. There are also a few practices that you should avoid after a water damage, because they can cause more damage or harm to yourself or your family.

DON’T:

  • Enter rooms with standing water where electric shock hazard may exist, such as when electric outlets, switches or circuit breakers are exposed to water
  • Leave books, newspapers or other colored items on wet carpet or furniture
  • Leave wet oriental rugs or other colored rugs on carpeting
  • Use household vacuum cleaner to remove water because risk of electric shock
  • Use TV’s or other electrical appliances while standing on wet floor
  • Turn on ceiling fan in rooms where the ceiling is wet
  • Enter a room where ceiling is wet and sagging
  • Spread contaminated water by walking unnecessarily throughout the house
  • Use personal fans if the water in the home is contaminated

The most important “do” is to call a professional, trained water mitigation specialist such as SERVPRO of Murrieta at (951)894-4392.

Protect your home from flood damage this winter

12/29/2015 (Permalink)

Fema Flood Insurance Flyer

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts that rainfall could be extremely heavy this year due to El Nino. This could lead to devastating floods. The 1997 El Nino storms caused an estimate $550 million dollars in flooding damage statewide.

SERVPRO of Murrieta is encouraging Murrieta homeowners to stay safe and try to reduce damage to their property as much as possible. Here are some tips that can help

·        Review your current homeowners insurance policy and become familiar with what is and is not covered, as damage due to flooding is typically not covered.

·        Call your insurance agent to purchase flood insurance for your home (and business) and its contents.

·        Make a flood plan and plan evacuation routes.

·        Itemize and take pictures of possessions.

·        Keep valuable items and family heirlooms on the upper floors of your home or building.

·        Clear debris from gutters and downspouts.

·        Move furniture, valuables, and important documents to a safe place.

·        Create a safety kit with drinking water, canned food, first aid, blankets, a radio, and a flashlight.

·        Post emergency telephone numbers by the phone and teach your children how to dial 911.

·        Plan and practice a flood evacuation route with your family.

·          Have a plan to protect your pets.

If you do experience water damage in your home, please call an expert as soon as possible to dry the area to prevent secondary damage, such as mold.

SERVPRO of Murrieta has emergency crews that are ready to respond 24/7. Call (951) 894-4392.

Homeowners may want to consider flood insurance this winter

12/10/2015 (Permalink)

Neighborhood flooded after heavy rain

As water damage restoration professionals, one of the most difficult parts of our SERVPRO technician’s job is encountering a customer who has damage that is not covered by their insurance. Unfortunately, some insurance companies do not do a good job of explaining what type of losses homeowner’s insurance covers.

One of the most frequent coverage issues we run into is outside flooding. Most homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood water that comes from outside, into a home. For this type of loss, you will need to purchase a separate flood policy.

With El Nino quickly approaching, it’s time for homeowners in Murrieta, Hemet and Sun City to decide if they could be in an area where flooding could occur. Flood policies take 30 days to go into affect, so don’t put it off any longer.

For information on flood insurance you can visit www.FloodSmart.gov, and if you do have flooding in your home, please call the helpful professionals at SERVPRO of Murrieta at (951)894-4392 or visit www.SERVPROMurrieta.com
